This is a favorite in the Philippines. The rhizome is popular as a spice condiment. It provides an inviting aroma and mild spicy taste that when used as decoction in hot tea it is quite soothing to a sore throat, common colds, coughs to complicated bronchitis and tuberculosis. Thinly sliced ginger was my sister’s favorite lozenge carried in her pocket. Chewing it increases the flow of saliva that will enhance appetite, taste and promote oral hygiene. Other uses include relief for indigestion, gas pain and stomach pain when prepared in full strength as tea. When made into a plaster, the juice rubbed on the skin stimulates perspiration and decrease swelling. The shape of the rhizome is an indication that it is beneficial for healthy joints.
