Tonsils_72

I worked as a critical care nurse for twenty years so I have a good reputation for knowing the best physicians in the area.  With this background, I am occasionally asked for my recommendation on certain doctors to go to in the area.

One recent inquiry of a colleague was for a good Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist. When I asked why, the response that I got was,  ” A friend wants her tonsils taken out.”

That said, I further asked, “Does she know that taking the tonsils out does not really deal with the underlying cause of why her tonsils get inflamed? ” I can recommend an ENT specialist but one thing I am sure is that getting rid of the tonsils is only a temporary relief of the discomfort. Tonsils are immuno-competent tissues that are part of the lymphatic system’s first line of defense. They are like soldiers that guard your body from any inflammation that might lead to more inflammation in other parts of the body.

Surgery may have a time and place for someone’s health journey and it is not really my place to make a decision for anyone who might be considering a type of surgery.  My point is that when considering an intervention for chronic or repeated discomforts do the research to confirm if it will manage the underlying cause or not.  One issue may be resolved but most likely, sooner or later, another issue may occur, and it may not be possible to resolve it by surgery.  One such example is an auto-immune disease. There is always an alternative for what we think the solution is.  How do you have that clarity and direction that are helpful when making decision such as surgery? Consider slowing down your life, relaxing and opening up to possibilities that you may need to make that will be helpful changes in your nutrition, lifestyle, mindset and emotional health.  There is no short cut when it comes to health, longevity and joy.

For tonsillitis, I find some basic home remedies helpful in as much as I grew up suffering from frequent tonsillitis in childhood to young adulthood. Fever, difficulty swallowing and pain became my frequent companion every time my tonsils became swollen. Finally, my condition got better when I found the wisdom to take my health and wellness journey into my own hands. This was my road less travelled prior in 1985.

For tonsillitis, I suggest that you:

  • See your doctor for a comprehensive examination
  • Assess the status of your bowels – frequency, consistency, odor, presence of pain/spasm
  • Consider detox program under the guidance of a qualified and trained holistic health practitioner.
  • Double your water intake.  (minimum of 8 glasses of water)
  • Gargle with a mixture of salt-vinegar-warm water every three to four hours (or more frequently when experiencing relief with increased frequency).  You can also add a pinch of powdered goldenseal or a drop of tea tree oil as an antiseptic/antibacterial.
  • Apply cold compress on your throat for pain and fever as frequently as possible.
  • Reduce by half or more the amount of processed foods that you eat. Eliminate when doable. Double the size of your servings for fresh organic, local, and seasonal foods.
  • Avoid high corn fructose sugar and other types of added sugars hidden in ingredients of many processed foods.  A simple rule would be to check out the list of ingredients. The shorter the list, the less processed.  Do not rely on what’s written on the front of the package.  Look for the list of ingredients.
  • Get adequate quality sleep (six or more hours with a minimum of one interruption to the bathroom when necessary).  Frequent rest when possible during the day time.
  • Walk 15 minutes in the morning, noon and evening to mobilize fluids for natural detoxification and balance your energy.  Outdoor is preferred.
  • Herbal soothing teas (every two hours when tolerated) that are eases tension and decreases inflammation.  I favor chamomile, lavender, goldenseal, Echinacea, and lemon.
  • Consider natural high quality anti-inflammatory supplements (i.e  curcumin, fish oil, krill oil.) Caution with your sensitivities. Link to recommended supplements.
  • Have a hilot healing massage (with focus in the lymphatic system) to mobilize nutrients and stimulate chi (flow of energy) for detoxification.

Remember that each condition, each person is unique. No one solution suits everyone. Tap into your inner knowledge and wisdom. You may add other solutions that might have helped you before. What I offer will be tailored for your specific needs, preferences, and lifestyle.  It is always helpful to consult a health practitioner who can help you monitor your condition.
